An Afternoon in My Life

January 25, 2010

A couple of weeks ago I was walking around the house picking stuff up while Kyler was napping and Ryan was playing on the computer, and realized that I needed to document the “stuff” in my life–the little things that tell a story about my day-to-day activities. I wish I had the foresight (and the time) to do something like this every day, but I figure once every month or two will be good!

1. A binky sitting on top of our water cooler. Kyler, at 2 and a half years old is still using a binky…and is VERY much attached to it. We keep saying that we need to get rid of it, but neither Matt nor I are feeling quite ready to deal with taking it away from him yet.

2. Ryan’s potty training chart: At 4 and a half Ryan is still having some trouble in the potty-training department. So every time he goes in the toilet he gets a sticker and then various prizes every time he gets 5 stickers. Don’t you love the smudgy fingerprints all over the chart and my fridge?

3. Ryan’s special present from Santa Claus: On Christmas morning Ryan found this present wtih a note attached from Santa, telling him that once he had gotten 10 stickers on his chart he would be able to open his present. So about 30 DAYS later he got to open it…yes 30 days. Like I said, we’ve been having lots of trouble with that kid. Inside was a big Play-Doh set.

4. A pomegranate: I LOVE pomegranates and look forward to eating one or two every year around this time. This was my second one, and I was hesitating cutting into it since the night before I had sliced my finger cutting into the first one.

5. A beautiful winter star on my pantry door: My sister-in-law, Maquel, made me a set of these stars for Christmas–one for each month of the year. They are SO cute and make me so happy to look at!

6. Ryan’s project from preschool that morning: They were learning about the 5 senses.

7. What was on the menu for dinner that night: Although we ended up getting pizza because when the time came to actually make dinner I just wasn’t in the mood. Although I did make this a couple of nights later and loved it!

Laura: Oh my gosh! You have NO IDEA how refreshing it is for me to hear that your son is still struggling with potty training at 4 1/2. Thank you for sharing that! I have reached my end with my daughter and training. She is 3 1/2 and it seems that everyone else with kids her age was done with potty training ages ago. We have been working on it for a year. Ugh. We finally decided to just take a break and forget about for a while. But it is nice to know that I don't have the only kid that didn't get it for a long time. The new plan is to wait until her little bro who is almost two trains. I think he will get it much quicker and she will do it because he does. Fingers crossed!! (I'm taking Get Out of Auto and learning a lot! Thanks for taking the time to teach it.)

joy: My boys all trained very late and I have to say my biggest challenge to date as a parent! Eventually they get it ALL the time! We also had a child at 3 attached to the binky. We gave them to the Easter Bunny for his/her baby bunnies. In return the Bunny would give him a special treat. It worked better than our other attempts. Good Luck!

Kyla: These are such wonderful photos of everyday life! I MUST do this very soon. And I sympathize with the potty training. My little girl was HORRID! She finally had to be the one to decide she wanted to do it herself. Luckily she decided the first day of Kindergarten, and we've only had a few incidents since then. What's up with these STUBBORN kids?! ;) Good Luck!

Laura: My sweet little daughter didn't do #2 in the potty until she was almost 4 (was doing #1 for quite a while). The good news: once she was trained, she was trained, even at night. Only a handful of accidents in the intervening 2 years, primarily because she would wait too long and couldn't get to the bathroom fast enough.

ginia: I love the photos but my absolute favorite is the one at the top of the child with their eyes at the counters edge-wow-priceless! My boys were fun to potty train we played lots of games...cherrios in the toilet they aimed at them. I would put in blue food coloring and wow they could make it green, red they could make orange...magic. Then along came my daughter and she was 4 it was rough! My mom always said "none of them walk down the isle in diapers" so hang in there. With the binkies we did the same for all three and it worked great...we told them that they could take it to the toy store as money (all the binkies in a baggie) and buy one special toy for it We had talked to the manager in advanced and he was in on it. Each chose something totally different but it worked everytime. There were a few tears but we would grab the toythat they had purchased and reminded them and all solved. Good luck. I am just now starting my photo s but will catch up here soon. Thank you.
